The big alternative in a corporate setting would be Lotus Notes, but I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. Outlook and Exchange combo is still the best in the industry.
If you're talking for something at home then Eudora or Thunderbird would be something to check out as an alternative.
Just one query , is there any utility in outlook so that it can find all the email address of persons from whom i got the email , i just want to note all the emails and add them to address book , i there any way to do automatically search and add in address book
earlier i didnt used that function to automatically add person in address book when i reply , so whats the solutions for old emails i got
Or you can write vba code in outlook (Alt f11) to search the folders, get the deatils and add to contacts. you can get the code on google outlook/vba groups.

The advantage of Eudora is that you can have multiple installations, one for each email account. However, the disadvantage is that Eudora stores all of your attachments in a folder, which is a folder that can easily accumulate viruses. Also, Eudora tends to corrupt its indexes easily.
I have many e-mail addresses, at least one for each site I run.
After several years of looking, I decided on PocoMail... with some mixed feelings, I should add, but I've only occasionally reconsidered Outlook, which I think is probably it's only real competition. Poco makes it very easy to add and monitor multiple email accounts, which is one of the reasons I got it.
It's also an extremely secure email client, immune to a lot of the scripts that will run in Outlook. At the time I got it, pre-XP, Windows was much less secure than it is now, and Outlook was the target of every crazed hacker in the world. There's a price for some of the security, though. Poco isn't really html email friendly. It's got a very different rendering engine than Internet Explorer, so there are sometimes display problems (mostly with ads); and it's very hard to forward html emails without breaking them... and damned near impossible to forward an html email as a plain text message without some garble here and there (eg, some words run together, etc). Conceivably, Outlook has such html to plain text translation difficulties too.
Poco is very fully featured, with innovative interface features that have been copied by Outlook. Poco also a sister program called Barca, that includes a calendar and fancier address book... and I'll probably be upgrading to that soon. Barca doesn't appear to be a fully featured contact manager, though, and it's been long enough since I've looked at Outlook that I can't make comparisons.
I think that Poco uses .mbx files, btw.
I just wish there was a KMail port for Windows.

Aside from the wireless sync, the junk mail filters are just awesome - nothing can compare.
Three years ago when I switched - I looked high and low for anything that could come close to comparing. The only thing in it's league is Eudora, but the spam filters are not up to outlooks standard. I get about 1600 emails a day, with 1200 of that being spam. It all matters.

Thank you for recommending NOD32. I just installed the trial, and it seems to be much faster and lighter weight than Norton. Checking and sending mail is instantaneous now; it was taking up to 10 seconds with Norton.
Works for me but it's not an Outlook replacement, just an Outlook Express replacement. The lack of a good Outlook clone keeps the masses from moving to OpenOffice.
The original post only mentions email. For that purpose, Thunderbird works. If you need calendar too, then Lightning is also in the works.
