Safari Won't Display FULL ADDRESS

In Preferences - Advanced - Smart Search Field
The box at the top says - "Show Full Website Address", which I have checked.

I am trying to completely divorce myself from Firefox (due to rev. 47),
but I must keep returning to it to SEE THE d@mned FULL ADDRESS.

Hey, Safari, you've thought about it, you gave us the option, but
IT DOESN'T WORK.
Would you please fix it? SOOOOO annoying. How are we supposed to copy-and-paste links?

If this is the so-called "Smart Search Field", I much prefer a "Dumb Search Field". THAT I CAN USE.

I have Safari 11.0.3 but not High Sierra (yet). If I go to a site, it shows the full URL (except http/https) the lock icon tells me it is https so I get enough to share the full URL. What does your address bar show?

Surely that's a typo - V. 57 is when it went useless (for me).

58 is less useless than 57. Or, at least, the current version of Headers Live is less useless than the version that sent me temporarily back to 56. (The tried-and-true LiveHeaders is incompatible.) It's still ugly, though, even if you delve into prefs and change the default color scheme and get rid of the pointless dead space.

It does occur to me that this whole software-update business is very much as if you bought a new car and they'd decided to put the speedometer off to the right and the turn signals adjacent to your left knee and let's switch the gas and brake pedals because, hey, change for the sake of change and you'll get used to it in the end.

I'm still not entirely convinced that I did the right thing by accepting the free 10.9 (from 10.6) upgrade a few years back. I�m definitely kicking myself because when I got a new hard drive* last year, I didn�t ask them to partition it.

* Come to think of it, this is the first time I�ve actually had a HD die, rather than needing a new one for more space as in years past. I�ve yet to hit 10% usage. But I digress.
