Apple has said that it slows down older iPhones to prevent them from shutting off unexpectedly.
Tech analysts and angry customers have reported in recent days that operating system updates had caused older iPhones to slow considerably, with some suggesting that Apple could be using the tactic to encourage fans to buy new phones.

Apple insists the updates were made with a different goal in mind: It said the performance of lithium-ion batteries degrades over time, which can sometimes cause phones to suddenly shut down in order to protect their components.

Has your older iPhone slowed noticeably?

Oh, yes, my wife's old iPad is pretty much useless.

... or imply that an Apple factory battery replacement at $80 will do the trick.

Then again, batteries do wear out, and if one can keep them from tanking via software...

Would be a nothing burger if only it had been transparent from the beginning.

It seems there's now two class action lawsuits over "economic damage" [bbc.co.uk...]

I have an older iPad mini and it's deathly slow, it's terribly frustrating. I just "knew" they've been slowing older devices down, it's time they finally admitted it. I say let the lawsuits fly!

I feel like only iPads were touched by this noticeably. Let me be clear, i'm an ios app developer and recently i tried to run one of our applications on older iPad. Won't lie, it felt gross. So slow... Why would they do that? It makes no sense to me.
