What application do you use to view Visio files?

I've recently switched to a Mac and so from time to time find that I'm missing a much needed application. The latest one is a Visio viewer.

Opening the file in OmniGraffle Pro displays the following error:

OmniGraffle Professional can only open Visio 2002 XML files (.vdx)...

The file I want to view has a .vsd extension.
Note: I only have the Visio file and can't get it saved as an "XML Drawing"; none of my colleagues have Visio.

I've installed Concept Draw Pro, but it doesn't seem to be able to open visio files, as the option is greyed out.

Any suggestions?

Try this site: [visioformac.com...]

I have nothing to do with them, I just thought you might find it helpful.

Thanks travelin cat. That link (Concept Draw 7) is pretty much the same as Concept Draw Pro. I was hoping to get some other feedback, but doesn't look like Mac users really make use of Visio docs.

Yeah, I can't help you. I wasn't able to bid on a job several years ago because we're Mac-based at much of what I would have worked with were in Visio. Looks like a candidate for Boot Camp.

I'm interested in this too and am disappointed OmniGraffle didn't work. Looks like they'll soon be two versions behind.

So for now your best bet is to run Visio for Windows on your Mac. Assuming that new Mac of yours has an Intel processor (it does if you have a new Mac) you've got some good options options: BootCamp, Parallels Desktop, VMWare Fusion, or CrossOver.

Unfortunately, Visio is only rated "bronze" for CrossOver, which basically means it boots but don't count on it. Any of the other solutions should work fine though.

I'm not on a Mac and I may be totally off-base anyway, but doesn't Word 2003 and 2007 have a plug-in that will allow you to open and edit Visio files? Haven't researched it, but remember Word asking me at one point if I wanted it installed. (I also have Visio installed though, which may have triggered it).

Thanks timster, but I have a PowerPC. Might just go for VPN to solve all windows problems & be able to test sites in IE.

Ah, so you do have a PC you can log into? In that case...

Remote Desktop Connection for Mac is very usable if you have decent bandwidth. A lot snappier than "pure" VNC solutions.

Yes, timster, I have been using RDC for a few days now and it works great. I'll leave it at that :)
