So how about Linux OS builds and their respective Desktop/Laptop flavours?

Microsoft Windows is being narrowed down to only "one" build, whilst Linux seems to be exploding with it's various open source builds.

Shouldn't the Linux desktop builds have their own dedicated sections/threads like Microsoft has for their versions/builds?

Seems we've got 'nix' all bundled up in a very small section of sub-forums/threads.

I could suggest starting the new Linux build section out with some of the often most used Linux operating systems ... Linux Mint, Deepin, Ubuntu, Pop_OS (via System76), or we could go with the most popular RPM-based, Debian-based, Slackware-based, or something along those lines.

Of all of the years I've been with WebmasterWorld, I don't think I've ever made a suggestion like this, or any suggestion for thread layouts at all ... but being since Microsoft Windows is sort of going the way of Android, I thought it might be nice to give the top Linux builds their long overdue recognition and pull them out of the "sub-forums" and give them their well deserved place as a main Like Microsoft has enjoyed over the years here.

As a previous moderator of this forum I will try not to be cynical, but 2019 saw 6 new *nix related threads here, down from 7 in the year before. Adding additional subforums will dilute that even more. The first step should be an increase in quality topics in this forum IMHO.

BTW, the separate Windows 7 and 8 forums here have been deprecated and all Windows related discussions are now in one forum Microsoft Windows OS (XP/NT/Vista/Windows 7/8/10) [webmasterworld.com]

Second @lammert ... I suppose one reason there are so few 'nix comments is there are so few PROBLEMS ala M$ and iOS ... :)

i think both the explanations are right. *nix servers are pretty much problem free at the OS. Most problems are with specific software (e.g. Apache or a DB) which might have its own forum. Even some OS level stuff might belong in the security forum.

Problems with Linux desktops are not particular relevant here and its better to ask elsewhere. The last issue I had was with a Nvidia driver on openSUSE. Not something I would ask about here.

Most distros have their own forum sites and social media support. It wouldn't be duplicating these sites as there does not seem to be as much of an audience here for such a forum.

I think the problem with specific forums for different distros would be crossover points. In many cases, a problem and solution for build X would also be relevant to build Y. It also makes it harder for users to know where to post. Finding the closest suitable matched build or a dedicated forum. It's hard to pigeon hole some specific posts.
