The last time I used floppy disks, was in 1996... and I still have ALL my floppy disks since the mid 80's. They are carefully packed in boxes , you know, this kind : [qualitasdistribution.com...] with the lock so that no one could steal your disks :)

I think I finally threw mine away--yup, same kind of lockable box--after checking with a computer store to make sure there wasn't some honorable recycling option. They're fatter than CDs, so you can't really do creative things like coating in shellac and then using them as bathroom floor tiles. And most of them had the default black case, which would be pretty overwhelming if used as shower tiles (the only other use I could think of).

Computer buddy of mine, back in early 2000, let his wife have all of his old floppies (3.5"). She turned them into "bead" curtains for two windows in his "man cave". Rather clever. With the many colors these disks came in she created designs that were pleasing to the eye. That's what I call "recycling".

I also suspect there was an unintended insulation r factor as well.

I still have them ... if not just for sake of posterity.
Some have 56k drivers for dial-up and others have extremely short software writes, and still others have graphics and notes.
I've even got an old 32bit Microsoft Windows 98SE box that I can look at it all on if I want.

And as far as Linus Torvalds killing floppies? I'm running on the Linux 5.0+ kernel on a few of the older boxes, and the floppy disc still mounts up, reads, writes, and all of that other dinosaur stuff.
