How to Get Do-Follow Backlinks?

Hi,

Sorry, if the question has already been ask, but I was wondering how one can get backlinks, which can be counted and help your ranking?

I mean, it looks like today, everybody is adding the "nofollow" parameter to outgoing links. Certainly worrying of penalty if linking to bad sites.

My site has been linked several times from articles at the NY Times site, which gives a boost of traffic for some days, but their link is nofollow, and so is not counted by Google, and not showing at the GWT. I think this is too bad, because it shows my site has some good value, but I don't get any credit (from a ranking point of view).

Wikipedia, is also using my site as several sources, but it doesn't count either.

All links from Twitter/Facebook are not counting either :(

Just because it's a nofollow doesn't mean it's not counted.

Most website owners would love to have links from the NYT and wikipedia. They carry value alright, and are far from worthless. Don't worry about nofollow, it only blocks pagerank and anchor text, but there's a lot more to Google rankings than that.

You say your back links aren't showing in GWT. Have you checked that they're indexed on Google search ?

How do I do that?

I have also some links from IMDb, but they don't appear either. The thing is at IMDb, beside the nofollow attribute, they go pass exit links to a redirect page, and I think that Robots are blocked at this level. I think this is unfair.

Everything helps, just not the same way as the early web. Links these days are generally nofollow for various reasons, but they are not completely discounted. There's back end processing that accumulates over time (we don't know what that time period is) but one sunny morning you'll wake up and see a real improvement, some 6 months to a year later (my personal experience).

No-follow links do not count, period. They literally drop off the link graph and have zero effect.

The value in a prominent no-follow link from a site like Wikipedia or IMDB is that it has a lot of traffic and popularity and eventually someone will discover your web page and give you a link from there. Any lift you experience from a no-follow link is indirect and in that manner, but not directly from the no-follow itself.

No-follow links still have some usage. It makes your links profile looks more natural.

"Looking natural" presumes that Google's algorithm still incorporates statistical analysis technology from 2003. Highly unlikely.

I would rather have the real traffic from a newspaper article than a tiny additional drop of Google "link juice".
