Photo management software - recommendations?

Alternative to Nikon Picture Project

I'm fed up with Nikon's free Picture Project software crashing on my Mac every time I want to view a slide show and think it's about time to seek out a more stable alternative. Apple's own iPhoto is not an option.

I like what Picture Project offers: the ability to tag images with keywords; the tag mark and protect functions; the search filters, and the basic photo editing tools for when a minor tweak is all that's required.

It is rather clunky though, and slow when swapping between View and Edit functions, so something with a bit more oomph when handling files would be a blessing.

I've no idea how many photographs I have. At a guess, possibly somewhere between 4-8,000, maybe more (can't bring myself to consign images to the trash!).

Any recommendations?

Whats wrong with iPhoto? Just interested.

Google Picasa looks good. I have been considering switching to it myself.

I currently use Digikam. I would recommend it, but I am pretty sure the Mac versions is either beta or a pain to install.

It's a never ending struggle

I've tried:

Adobe Bridge
Lightroom
Apeture
ACDSee

I still don't have anything I really like. :) I'm mostly back to Bridge at this point.

It sounds like for what you're looking for, you should consider Lightroom. Lightroom is a good program, it just doesn't make sense in my workflow.

I use Picasa, Microsoft iview media pro and Canon utilities swapping between all three for different reasons.

Any quick edits are still done in Irfanview - the best picture viewer and light weight image editor around!

Whats wrong with iPhoto?

It's just personal preference. I used it for a while four or five years ago and didn't like it. I'm sure it's a different beast nowadays, but I'd rather use something else.

Google's Picasa isn't available for Mac, as far as I can see.

Adobe Bridge looks interesting though, and I have that installed already, so I'll have a play around with it and see what it has to offer.
