I'd create new layers/instances of the object you want to add gradients to then use transparencies in your gradient and on the object/layer to create the effect. Layer transparency settings are quite powerful - especially when working on photos.

Ok I see what your saying, I was thinking it would be possible but couldn't figure it out fully hehe.

So just create another layer, and make sure the layer is transparent.

Fireworks CS3 allows you to apply 16 color gradients which is more then you'll ever need. Couple that with layers and you can apply any number of gradients to an area and get a variety of effects.

Hmmm, me thinks I'm a bit old school here. I go to Commands > Creative > Fade Image and do some things from there. For most of my gradient work, that works well.
