Thumbnails

How do I make them

I've got several 800 x 600 pictures and I'm trying to create a page of thumbnails to link to them. The problem is, when I resize the images to thumbnail size, they pixilate to the point where the image can't be recognized. How do I create thumbnail images, say 100 x 75, and still have a picture that can be recognized? Help!

Unless youhave an editor program such as FrontPage which automatically creates thumbnails and has a "resampling" feature, your only other option is an image program. Open the large file in the prgram and resize it to what you want then save the resized image as (example) foo_sm.jpg, or .gif, whatever, then put the small file on your page and link it to your large image.

You could also do a search for "thumbnails" as there are some companies that offer free software. <snip>.

The really bad thing here is by sizing them using HTML attributes it negates the whole idea of thumbnails - reducing file size so your page loads fast. An 80K file at 100% of size is still and 80K file if you reduce it using HTML attributes - it's also what's causing your pixelization.

Can't do search terms here, so keep looking, remembering you want to resize your images. :-)

Irfanview will will do batch resizing and a whole lot of other things. Best part is....<drum roll> It's free.

I use PHP to create them, on-the-fly for low traffic sites, and cached on a local disk for higher traffic sites

That works fabulous. I was trying to create thumbnails with Paint Shop and not having a lot of luck. Basically when I reduced the image to thumbnail size, it pixalated too much to be recognized. But these thumbnail images work great. I've got thumbnail links to 30 pictures and the thumbnails only use 300K. That works great. Thanks everyone for your help.

I'm not familiar with Paintshop Pro but your bad results are most likely from a poor choice of settings especially if you are converting GIF's.

I am as always in favor of simplicity and usability. Most of my thumbnail work I do with Irfanview. But from what I read in this thread, I have to try some other options to see how they will work for me.

Irfan View, Photoshop, Corel Draw you name it. You can get many tuts on the web if you don't know how to do it.
