Need help creating background pattern

I need some help creating a background from this image: <snip>

I want to completely cover up the image in the center, while retaining the two carton dieties on the left and right, as well as the vertical pattern. My aim is to use the bits of the existing canvas pattern to cover up the central rectangle, as well as the text "Coming September 2006." I don't really mind if the circular design is still there.

Ordinarily, I would have used PSP on my PC to clone brush parts of the image onto the center, but my PC harddrive is shot and in the shop trying to be restored. I tried using GIMP to do the same, but the end result looked amateurish and quite bad.

Can anyone give me a hand?

No URI's please, see TOS [webmasterworld.com]

Hi eyeofnewt

Welcome to WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com] :)

I'm pretty sure the the gimp does have a rubber stampo tool - can you set that brush to feather too?

Duplicating areas of your design using the select tool and a feathered edge might also work in this case - then flattening the image and merging the new sections with the blend and blur tools...

You can do this on Corel Xara 2. Create a sample grid pattern. Square grids and then add a high tech appearance to a Web page. It's really easy. You should try it.

Ulead Photoimpact is good for this, for that matter its good for many web based graphics needs. The background generator will generate a tile that will match up if you are repeating it. There's literally millions of combinations of textures, color schemes etc.
