can anyone recommend a simple, free video editing software ... basically i have some WMVs that i just need to chop down in terms of length

Movie maker on PC or iMovie on Mac will do it. Pretty easy to use and good quality.

I guess you can try also Ulead Video Studio. This software has a easy interface, so you can edit very simple...

If you download the Windows Media Encoder, you'll find in the package an utility called Windows Media File Editor - it allows you to cut the files at key frames.

Virtual Dub is a free and easy to use software.But it has some limitation. For professional use, you will need something like Ulead or Pinacle. Try a free trial then make up your mind.
