Hello. New to this site, info is great. This is my first post.

We are developing a desktop application (a player) to display educational content that is pulled from the web. Part of the content is video. Can anyone suggest a good codec to use in our embeded video player? I apologize if I'm not using the right vocab...I know just enough to be dangerous. I am the project manager and have been asked to identify what codec we should use.

Since we are creating our own desktop app, I am not concerned about installed base (which I understand would suggest I use Win Media, quicktime or real) I am really trying to balance great quality with file size. Are there licensing fees involved? Any comments are greatly appreciated.

Flash's new InVu2 is really cool. Instead of pixel blocks at low quality the details look watery, but hardly noticeable. I think the quality is much better than other codecs and the sie is comperable, and I love Flash so much more than all the other video players because of the customization. It may not work with a desktop app, I am only web but I suggest trying it out.

Flash will work for a desktop application and I also vouch for Flash. There ain't anything better than Flash.

i have never heard of "invu2", and there are no links in google for it... perhaps you spelled it wrong?

does that mean that you'll be playing back video content that was created by other people? or will you be re-encoding it?

the video server that you use will also be a big consideration... i think that the flash video server software costs thousands of $$$? but the windows media server is included for free with most versions of the win2003 server o.s., and you can rent servers with that o.s. for not much money at all.

with a win2003 server you also get the best drm in the business, and the windows media server software can be tweaked for all kinds of delivery options.

the downside to using wmv is that macs don't always play well with it, and since firefox does not do activex, there will be problems there... however, there is a page on the aol in2tv site where you can install free software to make your firefox browser wmv-compatible.
