Google's Project Shield is being opened up to all News sites in an attempt to help stop DDoS attacks as a form of censorship.

With this expansion, tens of thousands of news sites will have access to Project Shield. And because Project Shield is free, even the smallest independent news organizations will be able to continue their important work without the fear of being shut down. That could be a nice free tool for some sites that have to deal with DDoS attacks. Wonder if they'll ever open up the criteria and let other sites use the service someday.

Here's a site devoted to the latest news about major DDOS attacks:
[ddosattacks.net ]

I get the impression that some of these attacks are carried out by anarchists who simply want to cause disruptions wherever they can. Conceivably another category of attacks could be commercially motivated, such as cases where someone is trying to harm a competing business. As for news sites, they would most likely be attacked by individuals or groups who hate truth.
