Why on earth would they change their name?
Froogle never really caught on since it's launch in early 2003 (or maybe it was late 2002), so I'm assuming the name change has something to do with that.
Maybe they're leveraging the Google brand name to give it more stickiness with the end-user (much like Google Images, Google Groups, etc).
It'll be interesting to see how this will impact the volume that is driven by product searches in the long run.

"I don't think we understood the complications with rolling out another brand," Marissa Mayer, Google's vice president of search product and user experience, said in an interview with CNET News.com. "While it was a cute and clever name, it had issues around copyright and trademark, as well as internationalization…The pun (to "frugal") isn't obvious."

Google continues to be a one trick pony. As long as online earnings continue to rise everyone will ignore the fact that 99% of the decisions they make don't make any sense at all.
Imagine how profitable this company would be if it were run like a real company...

Google is already placing the Froogle results before the search results, and doing so in such a way that most people think THEY are the things to click on first!
With such a huge disparity in search traffic over all the other engines, it won't surprise me in the least if not too far down the road everybody who sells stuff on the internet has to use Google Product Search or face the consequences and be invisible.
