"As of today, all AdWords advertisers can pause and resume keywords (for keyword-targeted campaigns), sites (for site-targeted campaigns), and ad creatives. As you can see from the picture below, this feature is functionally similar to the pause/resume feature on the Campaign Summary page - we've simply extended it to the keyword, sites and ad variations tabs."
How does everyone find this? We have noticed a huge difference and everyone is extremely happy that Google has sorted this. We think that it is one of Google's best improvements for a long time.
I wonder how many other new features are on their way?
This is especially useful for those with ads in Premium Positions
You can create a new ad for your AdGroup, pause it, and then revert back to your original ad if you are unable to wait for the new one to reach a Premium Position (think these need to be editorially approved by Google and can take some time ....)
This will help tremendously.
Last post was meant to ask for a search and replace, so search for 2006 and replace with 2007, or find all ads that have "January" Offers and replace with "February" etc.
Maybe introducing time/date-based variables would be the answer to that. e.g.
[$month] Offers
Would show 'February Offers' etc, without having to change the advert. Thus allowing history to be kept.
This could work for date, day, month, year and probably other non-date related things too. Care would have to be taken with differences in word lengths, but those could be easily built into the system.
Feel free to add that to the 'adwords features I'd like to see' thread if it would work in your situation.
Recently I've had a role change in my company and have been asked to "clean-up" all of our pay per click campaigns and add in more new “long-tail” keyphrases and remove those that aren’t doing well. Although I’ve had no problems with our existing Microsoft adcenter and Yahoo! Search Marketing campaigns (as we never really had many keyphrases in them to begin with!), our Google Adwords campaign has been running for about three years and therefore I need to tread very carefully in any changes I make to this.
In the past, keyphrases were added to our account wherever it seemed appropriate - but there wasn't much "order" to them, now we’ve got unrelated keyphrases within the same adgoups all doing relatively well with ok quality scores and therefore I'm a bit aprehensive to move them in case their performance plummets. Leaving our campaigns the way they are would make it very difficult to make our adgroups more targeted to our keyphrases, but moving them around might ruin their existing quality scores – you can see my dilemma!
When I heard that Google Ads have put in the pause keywords feature, I was hoping that my prayers were answered! Therefore I want to ask whether pausing a keyword for any length of time would affect its quality score when it is unpaused? I ask this because I’m thinking of pausing those keyphrases that I want to move and creating new adgroups for them. If they don’t do well, then I would unpause the old campaigns and leave them there.
If you have any suggestions, they will be very welcome!
Although it took ages in the making, the ability to pause kw is now live.
One of my AdWords accounts was suspended a year ago ONLY because I tried to achieve that effect! I was accused (hold tight...) of 'manipulating' my budget (that's right) to achieve competitive advantage!? What I was doing was just changing my budget during certain hours of the day to avoid massive amount of clicks coming from one and the same IP ranges if certain ads were placed within the first 5 positions...
After being suspended I've asked Google how am I supposed to change my budget, so that it is not marked as an abuse by their system? No meaningful response... just that I'm violating TOS and that they can suspend my account without ANY reason at all...
So, now would you apologize to me Google?
Err.. "bravo"? these basic features should've been there from the start. the fact that it takes a corporation making billions every year YEARS to implement very basic features that any novice programmer would think of - makes me puzzle over the whole "we love google" religion even more.
Funny, I've never seen a single contribution of yours to the "Features I'd Like To See" thread. I'm excited to see your tangible ideas.
I'd like to think that this thread has generated many features, like this one, that have been implemented over the years. Certainly many have taken a long time... sometimes too long... but I can point to a number of other excellent features added during that span, as well. Certainly more than Yahoo, MSN, MIVA, Looksmart, or others...

One cannot really grumble with the speed of development, I bet there are a whole load of features coming too. Google does listen, learn and develop, no question about that. Adwords is an incredible system; startling.
Thanks very much for that poster-boy and exmoorbeast. In a forum that does tend to lean towards grumbling from time to time, it's very nice indeed to hear the occasional positive comment.
Much appreciated - and I'll pass your kind words on to the right teams (just as I do with the not-so-positive ones.)
