I recently made a pretty major change in the way my ads are placed, an an effort to raise my previously abysmal Active View / Viewable scores:
Until last week I was using Auto Ads, and as everyone says, Auto Ads play havoc with your Active View scores. (Which I can confirm. For years my Active View scores have been terrible).
So after years of languishing viewability scores, I finally got around to moving to much smarter manual placements.
The effects on Active View scores have been great. I went from a 40% Active View (using Auto Ads) to over 90% using manually placed ads .. which is awesome ...
but... my overall number of impressions has gone down quite a bit (mostly because all those previously unseen Auto Ads impressions below the fold aren't getting served now).
So... now I'm in this weird position of having kickass Active View scores, but much lower revenue. I didn't really expect that to happen.
To be more precise: I'm now making about 30% less in terms of total revenue with Active View scores of 90%+ than I was making when my Active View scores were just 40% (!)
So... I'm faced with the weird realization that perhaps my site was better monetized with Auto Ads, when my Active View scores were in the gutter.
I'm thinking about going back to Auto Ads even though that runs counter to just about every piece of advice I've seen.
Unless (here's my question): Is there some time delay involved here? Now that my Active View scores are great, should I give it some time to see if there is in fact a worthwhile rise in overall PageRPM?
How much time? Anyone have experience with making these types of changes?
Thanks in advance,
Senechal
