First, you cannot put ads on server error response pages (404, 403, 410, etc...) or any page with little or no content.

It's not really the Mediapartners-Google bot that is doing the caching, it's the Adsense index.

Google just followed another link to you non-existent page & received the 404 page. It is associating this 404 page with the now-defunct original page that had ads, but there is not enough content on this page to support ads so an error is created. Don't forget, Google blames everything on us :)

In addition to responding that the issue is now fixed, I would also disallow that original page(s) in your robots.txt.

If the page-level error continues, you could even try returning a 410 Gone.

I have a question. So if 4-10 old nonexistent pages are cached to a 404 page that HAD adsense ads, again adsense will complain? What's a permanent solution? I checked the 404 page in detail now and it doesn't have adsense code in it..

Don't over think this. The bot is just doing what it's built to do. You created this by putting ads on a 404 page.

It will take time for the Mediapartners-Google bot to discover your 404 page is now not in violation.

Well, I submitted the page for review and they rejected it.. so I'm at my wit's end on what to do next?! The page in question flagged by adsense doesn't exist on my site, and secondly my 404 page doesn't have any adsense ads anymore!

You are seeing why it is bad webmastering to delete pages. Google never forgets.

Also you are learning a lesson not to be so greedy by putting ads every place.

Is your 404 a custom page, or a generic 404? If all else fails, do the latter!

Heh! It was a custom 404 that caused the problem. One of those cake and eat it too kind of things. (Can't say don't revert as we have a clear cause and effect ...)

That said, g is a PITA and never forgets, much less forgive and that's the final part of the this tale of woe.
