Site with WAY more traffic, but less income!?

I've been with adsense for a good few years, but never understood all of the terms etc with what is what for income. I think I need some advice or help for with that is going on.

Site with low xx,xxx visitors is making 8x or so as my site with mid xxx,xxx visitors! Along with heavy traffic 40TB or so a month in BW! It sort of upsets me of what I should be earning.

The main income site is a plain 90s style HTML site, and the 2nd site that needs work on it is a a PHP directory listing site with downloads which helps a good amount of people, But its really starting to get not worth the money to put my time, sweat, and tears into it but I cant just shut it down due to so many that it has helped.

On the site that needs work currently have a top 970x90 ad, and bottom a 728x90 ad along with a wide text links add.

The amount of traffic a site gets is only one part of the equation. The quality of the traffic, where ads are implemented on a page, the niche and more all contribute to how well a site does. You say that the site with more traffic is a directory site. I might be wrong, but in general I don't think those do as well as other kinds of site. Does the smaller site have a higher CTR or a higher EPC than the other? Or both? A higher EPC generally means a better paying niche and traffic that benefits advertisers. A higher CTR usually means the ads match and/or enhance your content and offer a solution to a problem.

a site offering free downloads is not that attractive to advertisers ... that would explain why it doesn't earn much. however congratulations on so much traffic!

the sites i see with downloads generally have 'tricky' and deceptively placed ads (in my opinion), i've no idea how many clicks they get or how much they earn. your site has an ad at the top and bottom (which is very fair), however, clear ads like that are easily avoided by users, which could explain things a bit too.

Also, if I were going some place to download something, why would I want to click on an ad (likely an ad for more downloads at that)? There's WAY more to it than just traffic.

In summary different sites get different CTR.

In a good month my two hobby blogs can earn as much as my main site despite getting a fraction of the traffic as they have a better CTR and higher paying ads.

You got the wrong ads up. My google rep told me best paying ads. I mean your sizes are wrong - not much bids.
