Adsense RPM increased by insane amount briefly

Looking through my stats from last night, adsense RPM quadrupled for a few hours yesterday giving our site 4 times our usual revenue.

Having looked at the stats it seems the following options are the highest paying in terms of RPM for our site:

Text based,
Interest based
all bid types apart from active view CPM

I can easily switch an ad unit to text based to see what happens. I can also keep interest based ads running. But is there any way to opt-out of context based ads? I noticed that this had some of the lowest paying RPM rates of all of them.

Here is a snapshot of the adsense around the period where it rose very significantly then dropped down to normal numbers.

Can anybody make any sense of these numbers? As you can see, compared to similar days surrounding it, other days have had similar impressions and clicks, but nowhere near as high revenue. Is there a way of digging deeper into this within Adsense to see what went right that particular day?

What went "right" for you is quite possibly what went "wrong" for an advertiser. Could be as simple as that.

(Not to make you paranoid, but you're identifiable by these statistics and officially not allowed to make them public, though I've never heard of anyone being warned or punished for it.)

Ditto. An advertiser probably accidentally bid too much for a brief period of time. Realized it and lowered his bid.

Ember it takes two to tango... sorry, to over bid.

The price paid is always is one increment above the bid of the next highest bidder. But otherwise in this case, I would agree with you.

It will be interesting to see if any of these earnings will be clawed back at the end of the month.

These are from June, so they've already been paid. Oh well.

Overall, Adsense pays a fraction of what it used to. That freak incidence of getting paid "an insane amount" is actually what i'd expect for that traffic.

NickNNS, let's say that I plan to bid $.10 per click. The highest bidding competitor is bidding $9.99. If I forget to add the decimal point, then I can easily end up paying $10 per click and not realize it until I check back into my account.

Been there, done that.

I just had a 10$ click... Things can't always go bad.
