How often do you see visitors viewing your site(s) with:

240 wide computer displays?

320 wide computer displays?

Are those common ?

According to Statcounter, about 12% of my taffic in the last 24 hours came from window sizes of 540 pixels or smaller. The smallest was 176x188, no idea what device that was, maybe an old small phone.

Do you mean computer, literally, as in thing-that-sits-on-your-desk, or do you mean internet-connected device of any kind?

My first computer was 512x384. Bit smaller--by pixel count--than a typical smartphone in landscape mode.

This sounds like a viewport thingie...

The number of smaller viewports is going up as the number of data capable phones increases. Expect more, not less, in the future... and code your pages accordingly (so they are responsive to viewport size).

Smartphones are what I call "rude boxes", because I remember the world before everyone walked around with something in the hand that permitted them to be rude to almost anyone at anytime.

I assume anything 320 or less is a phone. Pretty much anything less than 1024 as a tablet or phone.

Computers started at 320x240. We're back where we started!

There will be more small veiwports in the future. General sites (ecom, info) might keep that in mind. Graphic and video might have to deal with scaling factors to stay "current"... but I suspect there will remain a "big" veiwport segment for some years to come.

(< 1024 my sites is about 30% these days)

This is somewhat of a repeat of something I brought up earlier, but my experience of talking with and observing people who walk around with their faces planted in those mobile phones/computers makes me wonder how much it's worth to try and court them as visitors?

And on a related note, there was a news story this past week about a college implementing a walking lane for those who walk with their face planted. I guess they were experiencing a lot of pedestrian vs. pedestrian collisions.

I'm back from the dead as I've written about before, but sometimes I wonder if it might not be better to go back in time a few years. It seems as if technology has progressed a LOT faster than it's human consumers.

I believe iPhones from the original up to iPhone 5 view content at a width of 320px, which would explain that common size (although the later models actually have a much higher pixel density). Because of the ubiquity of iPhones, I set 320px as my site's minimum width.

I can't imagine a modern smartphone having a width of 240px. The original iPhone had 320px in 2007, and it has only gotten cheaper to build better screens.

Edit: I would say the average resolution size is becoming smaller overall because smartphones use is still growing, but the absolute smallest resolutions are also being phased out. Fewer people are using desktops, but at the same time, people are getting bigger phones.
