Rethinking Responsive Ads

I'm having a change of heart about the AdSense responsive ads. For a while, I was a big fan, and implemented them in most of my ad spots. But lately, I've been testing using standard 300x250 ads in the spaces I'd been using for responsive ads, and the CPC I'm getting there is much higher.

My guess is that this is happening b/c there's more advertisers putting their ads in this "bucket" (for lack of a better term) than in the responsive "bucket."

Also, there's probably a reason Google doesn't include them in its Recommended ad formats in the AdSense control panel -- they make them available, but they recommend 300x250 and 300x100 for mobile.

What has your experience been?

I know I've said it before but it seams to me that it makes sense to use the advanced responsive code (where you can make adjustments to the media queries) and have more control over the size of the ads.
Depending on the particular page layout, I may have a banner or a skyscraper which is replaced by a 300x250 in smaller screens.

If you only have one ad on a page, I think 300x100 is too small.
