I just got approved by Taboola. Can I use their ads alongside Adsense?

Don't see why not, I see Taboola on many sites.

Yea, I see many sites running Taboola but I notice that some of their thumbnail images are a bit "suggestive". I see one image of Myley Cyrus with her legs wide open though they are covered and another image of a woman that is quite sexy with big boob though they are covered with the tagline "Best Wardrobe Malfunctions Ever".

So I guess they are fine?

They don't sound fine to me. I don't think I'd want them on a site with Adsense.

Quick AdSense decision filter: Would you feel proud to share everything on the page with your mom and/or someone you want to hire you? If your answer is yes, you're safe to go.

Are these native advertising ads (i.e. ads that kind of look like content but are "sponsored")? If so, you could get some blowback on the organic side if the links aren't nofollowed. I disabled them from the Disqus comment plugin because they were wildly irrelevant to my content and looked like crap, but now I know I've read something recently that Google has issues with them too.

(If they aren't, then never mind. Never heard of Taboola myself)

Happy to report that my Taboola earning is doing well. An example of what you'll earn: if you make $100 a day with adsense, you'll make about $20-30 a day with Taboola.

They require at least 500k page views a month to run their ads. You also have the ability to filter any offending ads you don't want to appear on your site.

I haven't received my first payment yet as I just started 3 weeks ago. I'll report once I received it.

That's very encouraging. Very few many supplemental ad networks to AdSense perform as well as that, I've found.

Yea, try Lijit as well if you haven't already. They pay well too.

I'm strongly considering trying them out. Is there a way to filter them out by category, or do you have to wait until an ad shows up on your site, note its title/content, and then filter each one by hand in Taboola's Backstage system?

You can filter by words/title. For instance, I have filtered the words girl, woman, women, sexy, Miley, torture, etc.

Trying it out and while there's much to like about Taboola, publishers who use it with AdSense are going to need to be very careful about what they allow through its filter. I've tried it briefly and noticed a lot of things they advertise that would likely be very borderline with regards to the AdSense program policies.

That's not to say you can't or shouldn't use it, it's just that it's something publishers are going to need to monitor very -- and I mean very -- closely.

Yea, try Lijit as well if you haven't already.

I've been approached by them and I'm interested, but I still haven't fully understood how publishers benefit from giving their code to Lijit, and then Lijit serves both your own AdSense ads and their Lijit ads. I see how it's good for Lijit, but hard to see how it's anything other than a wash for a publisher.

What do you think?

This is making me wonder if AdSense might consider some type of incentive for sites that don't display any competing ads - say 73% for a site offering no competition vs. 68% for AdSense displays with competition?

You never know, FarmBoy -- especially if Facebook gets in the game with an AdSense-like competitor.

Also, Google has been rumored to be developing an ad product that would mimic Taboola's (and Outbrain's) with a similar look-and-feel of those companies' promotions for sponsored content.

Personally I would welcome that, because there are so many interesting new ad formats that have been evolving out there on the major websites, that I would love it if Google tried more experimentation and innovation with their ad formats.

It would be foolish not to display other competing ad networks. As the saying goes: don't put all your eggs in one basket. I learned a big lesson when my google earning collapsed the beginning of this year.

Now ten months later, my earnings from other competing ad networks are slowly creeping up to almost match my adsense earnings. And I don't even give them prominent exposure on my sites. My goal is for them to surpass my adsense earnings so I can finally get rid of adsense or put it as my backup ads.

I just find adsense quite strict and unforgiving. I hear horror stories where publishers get banned for invalid activities or policy violation and most of the time, their decision is final. At least now, I feel comfortable knowing I can survive without adsense.

Well, my Taboola experiment has come to a premature close. Did a test with them over the past week and at least on my site, their CPC rates were less than a penny per click. To me, that's not nearly enough to justify placing them on my site.

You make great points, jbayalas, about not putting all your eggs in one basket. I think Taboola's not for everyone, however -- at least they're not for me.

Why would one opt for less earnings?

Why would one opt for less earnings?

Maybe there's an issue of a visitor not clicking an AdSense ad and resulting in $0 earning vs. clicking on an ad displayed by Taboola which results in something greater than $0?

Or there is the principle of "all eggs not in one basket" to have alternatives available if needed?

Which takes me back to the theory of Google paying a little bit more to anyone that doesn't promote a competitor. But it doesn't appear any competitor is even close to offering that level of competition ...yet.

... so i just received my first payment from Taboola. They pay net45 via Payooneer (their only method of payment) . I started in mid September and received the money in the bank today.

Well. Was it worth whatever it cost - loss of whatever revenue + the cost to run the survey?

Removing taboola does not increase my Adsense revenue so I have nothing to lose by keeping it. I have high traffic sites so it works for my niche.

I don't undertand what you meant by this:

"I still haven't fully understood how publishers benefit from giving their code to Lijit, and then Lijit serves both your own AdSense ads and their Lijit ads. I see how it's good for Lijit, but hard to see how it's anything other than a wash for a publisher. "

I just run their codes. I don't give my codes to them. I'm confused.

I was contacted by a representative from Lijit earlier this year, who asked me to send them my AdSense code, and they'd complement it with their ads. So the idea was, they'd basically put their ads in competition with my AdSense ads, and if their ads delivered a higher RPM, then they'd serve the Lijit ads; if AdSense was higher, then those would be served.

I'm not sure why they didn't just suggest having their own dedicated ad space on my site's pages, to be honest. My guess is they figured I wouldn't want to, because I have only a handful of ads on my pages as it is, and they thought that a proposal where I didn't have to remove any AdSense ads would be more likely to be attractive to me as a publisher.
