Anyone know what "enhanced ads" actually does?

I'm thinking about having a little fiddle with the options in adsense (again) and i see that there are two options for enhanced ads... one for text ads, and one for display ads.

does anyone know the list of changes that take place if you switch them off? I have tried it of course, but i don't see a lot happening. i know it can take a while sometimes, but so far no joy. obviously i dont want to click the ads—or even wave my cursor over them, because im paranoid—so maybe there are more changes i cant see.

Well, I can't help asking if you've been under a rock for most of this year or if you ever read what is written on a little site called WebmasterWorld.com? Having gotten that off my chest, here's a summary of things I know about...

Enhanced Text Ads may have...

-Big square hotspots with an arrow in them
-A small favicon next to the URL
-An image injected into the ad
-Panels (multiple ads in a single unit served in panels that respond to a mouse hovering over them)

Regular Text Ads (Enhanced turned off)
-Hotspot is limited to the title and URL of the ad (not sure about the text).

In both formats the linked elements are not underlined. Conventional wisdom points to enhancements as G's primary strategy for compensating for the loss of this visual clue where actionability is concerned. Titles can also be ridiculously large in both enhanced and non-enhanced units.

p.s. It can take many hours sometimes for changes to ad format to kick in.
