Responsive Ads

So I finally updated my site to responsive design. I also switched the ads to responsive design. I then picked smart sizing and put the ad on my site. The ads showing for desktop are small rectangles like the shape of a leader-board. It seems to me that 300x250 or a 336x280 would work much better. Should I trust them that they'll pick the best ads? Or is it set up to automatically fill up the whole width without trying to figure out which ads perform the best?

For popular pages my site has 2 versions and redirects depending on the resolution. The desktop version has 3 ad units 728*90, 300*250 and 336*280. The mobile version has the 320*50 and the 300*250 ad units.

For all other pages I use the 728*90, 320*50 and 300*250. Using CSS I hide the 728*90 if the user’s resolution is not wide enough.

The 320*50 and 300*250 work fine on any resolution even small mobile phones.

Not sure if this is the best solution but this is what I use.

Nickys, I have found the same thing. My site is currently being made responsive. In preparation I have tried out the new responsive ads and found that many of the ad sizes did not appear to be at their optimal size.

I will use their responsive ads with their advanced code option in which you manually set the size of the ad for a viewport width using media queries.

336x300 and 300x250 have always been the best earners for me so this is the size I will set for viewport which can take them.

Ger02 mentions hiding ads for lower resolution screens. Whilst many publishers do this, from what I understand it is against the terms and conditions, as an ads page impression is still counted even if the user didn't see it themselves.

I am getting around the hiding ads problem by using the advanced code option for responsive ads and setting a smaller size ad for smaller viewports.

I also question if these ads are truly 'responsive'. If you resize the viewport the ads don't change in size. They only resize when you resize the viewport and refresh the page as well.

I believe they said they're still working on that.

Just changed my ads to the responsive ads, I didn't use it because I didn't think it worked when I resized the page. People on tables may go from landscape to portrait so I think they should fix this ASAP. Thanks.
