There's an interesting post on Google's AdSense blog today about user-generated content and policy compliance:

[adsense.blogspot.com ]

"After the initial notification, you need to take action, not simply respond to the warning, but implement solutions to proactively ensure that violating content is removed and new content added to the network or site complies with our policies."

"You should ensure, though, that you are able to effectively screen all content proactively before choosing to monetize user-generated content."

However, does Google itself meet that standard for its own sites (e.g. YouTube, Blogger, any other sites with user-generated content)? It seems not, because they rely more on "takedown", rather than proactively monitoring content. Doing it proactively is exceedingly difficult.

We don't allow any user-generated content on our sites at present. If Google has a screening solution (e.g. some API) available for publishers, I'd really be interested, and I'm sure so would others.

Me, I don't wanna risk it. I don't put my AdSense pub ID on anything I didn't create (or commission).

Right, the concern is that there's no clear sense of "proportionality" and escalation path. Back when those in the so-called "UPS Club" had their own reps, there was a greater personal understanding of each publisher's individual sites, etc. by Google. But now it seems to be too automated, and so one doesn't even want to get close to the "line" lest the consequences be disproportional to the violation.

My site is 100% user generated content and 100% screened by inspector #36. ;)

It's not that complicated to put automatic filters in the software to block most, if not all, of what Google finds offensive and filter it out from ever being displayed with AdSense.

I have software that evaluates the content and it either decides to display AdSense or other ad networks and affiliate programs.

CNET has an article with further analysis, calling it a "double standard", see:

A lot of newspapers have Adsense on their sites, along with user generated comments. If Google decide to go with this, then they should treat EVERY account equally.

The better approach would likely be to offer advertisers the opportunity to segment their traffic/ads: publishers vs. UGC-"dominant" sites.
