<--------venting

I usually don't check my adsense but maybe once or so a week but since there was some talk about ads being blocked yesterday I took a look. My best performing site was down big time but it was early in the day and let it go. Today I checked the stats and income was off by 90%.

I checked the site to see what could be the issue and low and behold no adsense ads showing.....Soooooo I asked another department if they had worked on the site yesterday and yep they took the ads off the site along with another client code that was coming down due to lack of payment..

Just wonderful more work adding it back to all the pages it was removed from. Sometimes I wonder....

...more work adding it back ...

What? They didn't make a backup before deleting the code?

Add up the lost income and deduct it from their pay, they'll never do it again. ;)

Sounds like a certain department needs to be deleted...

It is frustrating and lack of communication is no excuse since I am just a couple doors down in the same office. It was our graphics department. They are good at what they do I have no idea why they didn't just ask me for some assistance, but guess what that won't happen again.

One real good thing that has come from this is it has gotten me looking at the pages the code was removed from and I see some things I need to do to improve the pages for better conversions.

When you work on a high number of sites sometimes it takes an error to bring you back to improve the work done the first time. Not saying it is the best way but in theis case it got me back for some much needed changes.

ken_b the work was done through the cms so any updates is real time and yep no backup. We do a daily backup (all sites) once a day at the end of the day.

bwnbwn, I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. I hope you're able to get your ads up and running quickly.

It's good that you're finding a silver lining, though. While any time is a good time to optimize your AdSense performance, times when you need to work on your code anyway are great times to evaluate what you're doing and what you can do to improve (like replacing that 125x125 with a 300x250).

Do you have any ideas in mind for how you plan to improve your pages and how you'll measure the uplift of the optimization?

Lately I've been really interested in learning about how, when, and why publishers update their sites (and especially their AdSense code). Do you ever make changes to your code just to improve AdSense performance, or do you usually optimize AdSense when you're already making changes?

Just curious. :)

AdSenseAdvisor the site in question has been a really good site from the get go. Why I can only say it is mainly women that come to the site I call the (clikers). Why? I have observed men and women surfing the web young and old. Women outclick men by a huge margin. Nothing beats a woman for clicking. It is like shopping most men get in and get out, women got to look at anything and everything (I am sure you been there.) From my observations they surf the web or sites pretty much the same way.

Yes I have discoverd some added pages doing well in the serps that did not contain ads and will be adding them on these pages. I have moved the ads to a slighty higher spot on the pages adsense is on, worked on my Titles (basic SEO) to hopefully improve rankings for better local search traffic.

I only use text ads 468x60 Two ads displayed with just 1 ad per page. I assume this is just me but it is a total turn off to go to a site with the ads plasterd all over the pages. I have tried more ads on the pages with poor results. I just think there is a point were it truns the user off so I keep it short and sweet. I can't post conversions but it would suprise you if I did on the amount of traffic we get to income.

optimize AdSense when you're already making changes
Yes I do it when adding adsense due to the high number of sites our company has it is really hard for me to go back very often. I do keep an eye on performance of each site from the adsense interface, but as I said I don't do it everyday more like once a month. If I see a drop (out of norm)I will investigate, but adsense is really a secondary income on the sites, and a really good one. Our sites are used for generating leads for paying clients so I have to be careful what pages the ads are displayed on so not to drive traffic away from our clients.

Each page I add the code to is done by hand so this is why I need to do it right the first time.

I was able to get adsense added to most of the pages it was removed from and it was a banner day on the site so I am sure the move I made was a good one.

AdSenseAdvisor placing adsense ads and the number of ads is like going fishing it's all about getting in the boat on the water and spending the time to learn by trial and error.

On another note the new adsense interface is a thumbs up from me.

Arghhh...nightmare time!

Doesn't your cms allow you a standardised layout with auto inclusion of AdSense or do you create each page differently?

HuskyPup I could standardised the ads to display on the pages the problem is I can't pick the pages and I can't have ads coming up on client pages.
It could have been fixed with a different folder name for the client pages verses the other pages but the problem is most of the sites were built pre adsense and it is just to much trouble to rewrite the code for just adsense.
do you create each page differently
Yes

Lately I've been really interested in learning about how, when, and why publishers update their sites (and especially their AdSense code).

Off topic, but I'll give my answer.
The biggest reason I undertake updates of my site is if it will speed things up or streamline the site.

I have never switched over from the old AdSense code (circa 2004) because the new control panel driven code does not allow me to insert the old google_ad_channel ID's into the ad code dynamically via PHP when the webpage is generated AND because I can't get the new code to collapse down to nothing if there are no ads to deliver.

It would be a serious PITA to switch over to the new code so I really need a really good reason to switch.
