I couldn't believe I was actually adding "google.com" into my competitive ad filter.
It was blowing my mind that I was actually forced to filter the company serving the ads!
Somehow it just seemed wrong, very very wrong.
Did this happen to anyone else?
Considered the impact of serving personalized ads before filtering imo
The fact that it shows up at the top of the preview tool also tells me that it isn't just personalized ads.
Google is flooding the market, and they are going overboard.
Here is something to consider. Will their Nexus 1 conversion data result in new tweaks to the AdSense network?
If GOOG were "favoring" the content of adsense materials (...) would that be strictly ethical?
It would, if they pay a market conform eCPM, i.e. compensate the lower CTR with a high price per click. Unfortunately I have seen no reports yet of the actual CPC they pay for these ads.
I personally saw a CTR drop of 40% and eCPM drop by 60% yesterday, which indicates that they were not only using my high earning ad locations, but also pushed the high paying advertisers out of sight. No sign of extremely high paying clicks on any of the channels. After google.com has been placed in my filter list eCPM is back to normal.
I know Google have said that search operates at arms length from Adsense. Have they ever promised that with regard to marketing other products? I think not, and it looks like we know why.
That said, I had good CPMs yesterday, especially considering it should have been a poor day for other reasons.
In Southern California last year around the time gay marriages were a HUGE issue being put to a vote sites of ALL types began showing Vote on 8 ads regardless of topic. Childrens book websites proudly asked kids to vote on 8, it was ugly... but also proof the system can be made to show anything at any time for the right price.
