I haven't bothered implementing the Competitive Ad Filter feature on my site. Is it actually worth doing or is the consensus to leave well alone?

And, if you do implement it, are there any readymade lists of advertisers you should definitely block?

Cheers
Stephen.

There is no consensus.

Some of us tried it early on and found it a mostly waste of time and effort. After over 5 years of using AdSense I have maybe 15 - 20 urls in the filter, and very seldom even look at it, let alone add another url to the list.

Others use it a lot and have filled the 500 slots available. Now they have to spend time deciding which url to unblock if they want to block a new one.

Basically you can only try it out and see what works best for your site.

Tried the filter for a few months some time ago.

Was overwhelmed to see the same ads with apparently limitless word combination domains.

Concluded that it was humanly impossible (for me) to monitor what ads appears on my sites unless I myself become the biggest visitor/viewer of my own sites.

Cleared my filters and now letting AdSense "display targeted Google ads on [my] website's content pages" (Their original pitch.)

:) Hope it helps.

Back in the past (when Adsense was still worth the effort for us) we were big fans of trying to find ads and advertisers that did not match our content, or those arbitrage players that were just in for the odd cheap click and the quick money.

Since Adsense revenue has gone down dramatically since it's peak (again, for us) in 2006, we have lost interest in this game of whack-a-mole. The preview tool offered by Google is just too bad and the blocking abilities of the filter are far too weak. In general we think it's just not worth the time and effort to fiddle around with this. Plus, the fact that Google never significantly improved the preview-tool and filter speaks volumes what they think about this.

We put our sites on autopilot; the filter was left as it was in winter 2008/2009.

Thanks for the feedback. I guess it is best not to worry about it then.
