What Part of a Website Would You Use Link Units over Ad Units?

Thinking of removing Ad Units from a low-clickthrough part of my site.

I know there has been much discussion about Google Adsense Link Units sometimes returning better results than Ad Units. But I wonder if we have discussed in much detail why this might be the case. Or, more specifically, whether link units might convert more favourably on different kinds of website, or different sections of a website.

I don't want to dwell too much on my specific example, however it may be worth using it as a starting point. For example, I have a section of one site which is heavily information-based. It has a fairly low conversion rate. People go there for information about my subject area and I can understand why they might not be in a 'buying' mood and therefore not click on Ad Units.

I was going to remove all advertising from that section, but I wonder if Link Units might be worth a try? There would still be a low click-through rate, but those that did click might be those who are seriously interested. Perhaps?

Maybe this is a bad example, but on a general point, it might be interesting to discuss what types of website, or sections of a website, do Link Units perform better than Ad Units?

Personally, I have found that link units work best on my home page and my second-level index pages. Ad units work best on articles.

Your mileage may vary.
