Yes, sorry, I should have mentioned that I tried that and I got the message as above - "Please be aware that if your Google Account is a Gmail address, you will not be able to change it at this time."

I hope there is another way :(

This is not really a "newb question." You've raised a really good point. I wonder why it can't be changed? Maybe they can change it if you write to AdSense support:

Scroll to the bottom to where it says, "If you've reviewed our resources and still wish to contact us, you can do so here"

Thanks tim, I have sent an e-mail asking for the account to be closed down so hopefully I will be able to use my new e-mail address for a new account. I'll let you know what they say.

Ouch - I have changed non gmail addresses on my google accounts a couple of times. I must remember never to combine gmail with a Google account.

The need to have a separate email address for each Google account is a pain. I opened a second account in order to set up a campaign with some Adwords vouchers which were only valid for a new account.

I had my account with a Gmail, and what I did is to delete that Gmail address. Then my non Gmail one took over as a main one.

I would think to fight scams, SPAM and the other suspicious activity that people use their gmail accounts to accomplish might be a reason. Keep the account tied to a person so he/she can be easily tracked down.

Aha! Now I get it...

Yup, I'm glad I don't worry about these things. In fact, I sort of consider my AdWords spending as "tithing" back to Google.

I would say it can't be changed due to tax regulations. You've agreed to a certain tax regime and you can't have 2 tax ID's within the Google system.

In theory it'd be possible to transfer your tax info to another account but I'd say that'd complicate things for Google so they probably won't allow it, unless you send a written request to.

In another forum I've seen a reply to the extent that you can cancel one account, lose all the money in it, and then recreate another account....doesn't sound very practical, but should be ok with Google, as long as you don't have 2 accounts.

Also, can't hurt to contact them and ask, even if they deny, it'be good to have an official word on it.
