One of the sites I run is about mobile phones. One of the ads that appears very regularly is for a free mobile download. That in itself isn't an issue, as it has a high CTR as most of my visitors are interested in mobile content anyway.
I was in the Apple store earlier and I clicked the ad, not because I wanted the click, but to look at the ad, as it's been around for months.
I was kind of shocked to find a single page and a box for users to enter their phone number. Terms and conds etc all open up in a new popup. So there is no way to navigate away from this page, so either they make the conversion OR the user clicks back to my site.
If smart pricing takes in to account time spent on the advertisers site or clicks on the site, then this company are going to be laughing. I'm wondering whether this is an ideal way to maximise conversions at the absolute minimal CPC. I bet my life they're not tracking the conversions with Analytics.
I checked out my competitors and this ad appears on most of those too.
I'm considering sending my question to my Adsense Rep but not sure they'll be able to shed any light as it may give away too much about how adsense works.
Any thoughts?
Here's a classic post about conversions [webmasterworld.com] from six years ago that is as true today as then.
Here's a typical comment from one member's personal experience (not speculation, experience):
I have to admit that out of my affiliate sites, even though they obtain top placement for many words the ones that look like more text and font changes gain more money than the highly graphic based sites. Can't really say why besides its quicker to see less graphical sites. :/ Do people really feel comfortable buying from a trashy looken site that took me 12 seconds to put together?
