i've been trying to raise my eCPM recently and i've been reading the tips about removing a few ads from your page.

i've only ever had two ads blocks at the most, but i've taken one off to see what happens.

but i've also got a link unit on every page. so i was wondering, does google factor in the link unit ads when working out which ads appear on your page?

i know that advertisers compete to be on your page with the price they are prepared to pay, so the less ad spaces you have, the more money for you.

would taking off the link units increase your eCPM further? or does google only take that into account when a user actually clicks on it and goes onto the second page?

Yes, link units do affect CPM because you get no credit when someone clicks on a link unit ad and only when they click on an actual ad on the next page you get a click. Thus at least your CTR will be halved or worse. I am not convinced that one should really worry about raising ecpm and if it has anything to do with CTR resulting from click units (which google knows well as it is its own product and can tweak the algo with just a few lines of code to accommodate it). The focus should always be on high quality content and excellent ad placement and that is when magic happens.

This is the main reason why I don't use link units. I had very poor results when I tried them recently. Almost no one clicked on the ads on the next page, and when they did, it was like one cent per click. They didn't perform well for me, but for others, I've heard they do perform well.

I never take much notice of eCPM, for me the more important factors are the actual EPC and total earnings.

FWIW I incorporated AdLinks the day they were introduced and my earnings immediately increased and to give you an idea of just the last couple of years of tens of millions of Page Impressions and a lot of clicks my earnings from AdLinks are ~50% of the total.

On Core Site 1 the actual EPC is very nearly the same for AdLinks as the AdUnit.

On Core Site 2 plus many satellites the EPC for AdLinks has been some 28.32% lower however I do know that I have had several click attacks on these sites therefore they could be distorting the metrics since Google never removes these fraudulent clicks from the reports.

Having written that the eCPMs are nearly the same with the AdLinks CTR higher just to muddy the water even more!

He-he! Now I really need to go to sleep for the night, I've had my big laugh.

1. In all cases they need to REALIZE they made a mistake (despite all the complaints from numerous users which they ignore)
2. They need to BELIEVE there is a true problem, that does not benefit them, based on the muffled complaints of a few.
3. They have to CARE enough about the small subset of users noticing the problem and complaining.

Right now I can point out numerous major errors in their reports and calculations which have been on for over a year, and prove it.

Always REMEMEBER, Google's interests may overlap yours but are NOT necessarily the SAME as YOUR interests. THEIR interest is always to get for themselves a part of EVERY LAST penny possible from your site. They may selfishly do this by deflecting your users to useless MFA sites, or to the G site when they feel there is no better value.

While, on the other hand, YOUR interest is to make the most money from your site, which may not necessarily be done by going through G. For instance by keeping the person browsing YOUR site and clicking on maybe non-G affiliates for more if you are only going to get <.01 or at least click on other higher value pages. Which is why they will likely NEVER implement the minimum CPC feature... EVER!

I don't fault them, nor say we shouldn't use them as a useful tool. Just, as with any parasite, don't trust them to ALWAYS have YOUR best interests in mind.
