Removing low performing ads - should I?

I've seen several people talk about removing low performing ads from their site and that it helped overall.

I've got a link unit I've had on my site that delivers over 3 million views a month with an ECPM of $0.04. Seeing this is so low performing, I'm thinking of removing it to see how it effects other ads.

Anyone tried this and seen improvements overall? This is a link unit, not an ad unit I'd be removing.

At least try removing it for a month and see what happens. I have removed low earning ads but it's difficult to judge the exact effect. It appeared to work for me.

Experiment with a few more ad formats and see what happens.

I have removed ads from one of my sites completely because it's CPM was under $.50. In the end I couldn't say it positively increased my overall earnings but I did see a slight increase in CPM overall. IMHO I would recommend you remove it for at least 2 weeks and see what happens.

It works wonders for me. A word of caution Be careful what you define as "low performing"

For me low average earnings per click is what I consider to consitute the main criteria for "low performing" Not just a low CTR or ECPM. However, if you are consistently experiencing a low CTR you might need to investigate the reasons for that.

Well one of the ads I was considering removing is a Link Unit (not an ad) and my sense is that these in general have very low CTRs anyway. I've removed it anyway and will report back in about a week and see if I notice any difference.
