Expired Domains: How to Determine if Previously Banned by AdSense?

I decided to buy some domain names that recently expired, but have plenty of inbound links from other web sites and are completely related to my web sites. I bought two for $14 and then thought I'd email adsense support to see if they were previously banned or safe to use. The response I got was sort of canned, but read like "We can not divulge information about publishers...etc... blah blah. If we determine they were banned, we'll let you know." I was trying to do the right thing, but couldn't get a helpful answer. Has anybody else had a similar problem... Any input? I've been involved with adsense for about 4 years.

I am not sure if I would develop the web sites, or simply forward them to a site I own and since there are so many links out there, I would create a 404 error page to redirect to a home page of one of my sites.

You can do a 301 redirect in the web server configuration much easier that to go round the block with a 404 error page..

As for being banned: just try setting up a test page and see if ads show up or if you get PSAs for a long time.

Good point.

From:

[groups.google.com...]

How does one know if the domain name they just bought carries a penalty (ie. keyword-stuff) while it was parked at a registrar. My site did carry a penalty for many years before I learned it did carry a penalty for keyword stuffing at godaddy
JohnMu: Hey Burchman519, if you feel that your site isn't ranking where it should be (especially if the domain name is new), I'd recommend submitting a reconsideration request just in case. Submitting a request when it's not required won't be held against you!

This page is well-worth bookmarking.

HP, that's addressing being banned from the index, not being banned from AdSense. Two different issues.

Use Google's adsense preview tool. I believe if the site is banned than it displays an error or may be no ads. If the site is OK then it will display potential ads for the site.

put up one page and some ads and see how it goes.

Wouldn't that put your account at risk if the new domain had been banned by AdSense?

A related question: If it does turn out that a domain you bought was banned from adsense, is there historical data that Google will reconsider it when you prove to them its a new owner and a different site?

What exactly does the following mean?

My site did carry a penalty for many years before I learned it did carry a penalty for keyword stuffing at godaddy

What does godaddy have to do with keyword stuffing and search penalties?

Google Has provided a tool for this, as you all know, it is google adsense preview tool.
type the domain name in your web browser and use Google adsense preview tool. If the adsense tool shows ads on the domain then it is OK. Otherwise it will show the error code "e:-2146697208".
Tool can get from the url: [google.com...]

I think this will be good enough to identify.

To be able to use the preview tool, you'd have to have access to a working site for the domain. Many used domains you're considering may already be inactive.

I recently bought a used domain name. I know this is not a definitive answer, but what I did was look up the old site in the Internet Wayback Machine (http://www.archive.org/) It showed me the old site didn't have Adsense at all. This helped me feel better about acquiring the domain name.

Of course, this is only helpful if it turns out the site didn't have Adsense at all. But I'd consider this a helpful first step for acquiring a used domain name.
