is it worth it?

I'm interested in mythology and it would be easy for me to create a good page of content every few days or so...but I don't think there are any products associated with this topic except possibly books for further reading.

Would you go ahead with that because you love it and it's easy for you - or would you find a topic more related to goods and services that are for sale?

If you have already a job, without any no doubts go for your favorite topic. You will help lots of people interested in that topic with your knowledge.

If the creative muse is upon you, do the site. Informational stuff is well-loved web wide. As for product add ons they can be both serious and silly (don't neglect the silly, little plastic widgets, painted widgets, even blow-up widgets -- not THAT kind, you silly billys!).

Put a framework up. Add the content. Look and discover the way to monetize. You need the content first in any event!

If you can write about it in your spare time without too much research, sure go ahead, knowing full well it's not going to be a spectacular site for revenues. But keep that in mind and don't bet on that site to bring you your core revenue, just the extra. There are ways to monetize traffic for non-commercial topics outside of Adsense with affiliate programs, like posters, books, movies, DVDs, music, etc.

And really, in the end, you never know. It could become a nice $5-$10 site day in your portfolio, or you could end up having a champion if you crush your competition... just don't count on it.
