Is it against the Google TOS to sell additional adspace on your site directly to advertisers (without any PPC middle man) on sites that have Adsense on them?

So on the left of my page I might have an Adsense strip, and on the top of the page I might have a banner that the advertiser paid me for directly. Is this allowed?

It is okay to do, as long as the adverts do not look like Googles.

Well, I envisioned them being banner advertisements. So do they have to have different dimensions than the typical google banner ads?

I guess so. Best to play safe and use different dimensions.

You have a perfect right to sell ad space on your site, and there is no reason to make the ads a different size.

There are certain standard sizes established by the IAB, Internet Advertising Bureau. They are the same sizes Google uses -- 728x90, etc.

All that Google requires is that you not poach their advertisers, not deal with other contextual networks and not sell ads that mimic the appearance of AdSense ads.

It's fine to do this, as they say as long as the ads aren't contextual and don't mimic Google Ads. In fact its a good thing to host other ads, gives your users a fresh alternative and after a while you'll find advertisers coming to you anyway.

One thing. Don't sell your ad space too cheap, make sure you sell your space for a fair price. Some advertisers really love to haggle. It's kind of fun in a way.

I think this covers it:

In order to prevent user confusion, we do not permit Google ads or search boxes to be published on websites that also contain other ads or services formatted to use the same layout and colors as the Google ads or search boxes on that site. Although you may sell ads directly on your site, it is your responsibility to ensure these ads cannot be confused with Google ads.

not deal with other contextual networks

Didn't they drop that requirement?
