Looking for some advice on improving revenue from ads

I'm new to the forums, I skimmed over as many posts as I could, and this issue has come up a lot before, but I was hoping to get some more specific advise for my situation, hopefully I'm not repeating overly discussed topics.

First off, I run a forum/message board style website. It has a good deal of traffic in spite of being fairly new. I get some 30,000 page impressions a day, and during the right time of the month/year I can break 100,000 page impressions. Right now, it targets a highly specific geographic location, which means 2 major things; one is that the majority of those page impressions are not unique, it comes from loyal users, the second is that in theory this site could be expanded to other regions and multiply the size of the site by 100.

Right now I use google adsense, and the revenue has been weak at best. Most days I get eCPM of around 8-10 cents. This is primarily due to a very low CTR, around .05%. I am relatively new to making websites with ads on them, so I assumed this was normal at first. But several of my colleagues lead me to believe that even for a forum style website, even with low numbers of unique visitors per day, these numbers are ludicrously low.

I'll try adding a few other pieces of possibly relevant information. Right now the ad is a single banner at the top of the page. I've considered moving it to the middle of posts and changing the colors, but I can't believe that would make such a significant difference. A good deal of ads seem irrelevant to the site, but the majority are at least mostly relevant. This also might contribute, but it might be unavoidable, since the topics of conversation on the board are hard to advertise too.

Any advice?

The single best thing that's worked in my forum is to show a large rectangle ad after the first post, to folks who are not logged in. To those who are, they don't get an ad. They're the ones least likely to click on them anyway.

Use adsense for users that are not logged in. Rotate adsense with other ad formats, especially CPM ads if you can get them, for your logged in users. Or just give your logged in users a free ride since they are providing your content.

>>>Use adsense for users that are not logged in.

I agree, regged users are not part of the solution. The proposed changes may change CTR and EPC statistics, but the the core problems creating a situation of poor monetization remain the same. This is what should be touched on. Possible core issues to be addressed are:

1. Not enough un-registered users hitting the site and clicking out on ads due to poor forum optimization

2. Less than ideal niche

3. Less than ideal moderation resulting in less poor search performance

I am not going to go granular with details on how to improve forum performance, but I encourage others to do so. In the meantime see the above two threads for more information.

if you're getting figures like that then you want to try and get paid by the number of impressions you get, rather than the number of clicks. because as you have found out, regular users of forums don't click on ads.

i know adsense does serve up those kinds of ads sometimes, but there are other companies out there who specialise in just CPM ads. maybe you'd be better off giving adsense the push and trying out one of those.

if you get paid by impressions then it's easy to jack up your income on forums - all you've got to do is reduce the number of topics and posts per page.
even if you only reduce it by two or three, people will still have to view more pages.
