Duplicate ads with two units

what is causing this?

I have only had one ad unit on my pages for some time but decided to try a second unit on some select pages. I am getting some identical ads showing on both ad units. I thought Google has a way to avoid this happening.

Will this sort out in time or is there something I should be doing to prevent the duplicates?

Not enough (enough-paying) advertizers on that specific page / your sector?

Annej,

I see that sometimes if I have two units on the page. But if I add a third unit to the page, the duplicate ads go away. Go figure.

alephh - I don't think it has anything to do with a lack of inventory of ads.

I reported this last month.

I agree that is has nothing to do with a lack of advertisers and I do see it happen when there are three ad units on a page.

As to Google having a way to prevent this from happening, I recall in the early days of AdSense that Google limited the number of AdSense units on a page just so this wouldn't happen. Obviously that is no longer the case, just as there are other things that Google now allows that they didn't in the past. Some of these rules would have been better left unchanged so as not to degrade the program.

I set the new ad unit to one that just shows two ads. So now there are 4 at the top and 2 on the side. That seems to be helping though I still occasionally get duplicate ads.

It's good to know it's happening on other sites. I won't be that concerned then, though I would prefer if they could all be unique.

Thanks for the info everyone.

I recall a former ASA addressing this here on WW and asking anyone experiencing this to contact AdSense support to let them know on which page(s) the duplicate ads were appearing.
