Adsense seems to be aware that publishers are experiencing and discussing recent earnings fluctuations. They've started a series of posts title "Diagnosing and treating revenue fluctuations" here :

Hoping to get further insight into the Adsense earnings machine!

Don't hold your breath waiting for that to happen. My guess is that this series of articles will actually be a tutorial on how to read your stats.

But thanks for the link! This is definitely a hot topic.

yeah, but better to get it from the horse's mouth... not that Adsense is a horse. More like a (cash) cow. mooo.

Or how to optimize your site. Or any number of reasons why your site has deficiencies which would of course cause these fluctuations.

Unfortunately, their post didn't tell me anything that I didn't already know. :(

I'm not even going to read it. The PR spin is going to be huge and would probably just tick me off.

Plex propaganda. I've heard enough already...

Nothing new. It's a good introduction to new members of the Adsense programme, though.

I specifically liked the part "Identify the symptoms - Now you're ready to diagnose any revenue fluctuation." That really got me interested, especially when keeping in mind the meaning of "diagnosis":

The recognition of a disease or condition by its outward signs and symptoms

Unfortunately, this is where the article does not fulfil its promise. From just looking at the figures, I can not see what is wrong with a site. Google admits this between the lines when writing:

In addition, you should check your pages for unpaid public service ads (PSAs).

Now, for any site that is substantially large, I have no chance to find PSAs. Unless I put up alternative ads pointing to my own site. Google does not provide me with tools to see what's wrong. THAT is the big problem for most advanced Adsense members.

I hope that it will be much more specific in "part II" of the article, and I am excited to learn about their view on moving averages and more reasons for declines (it surely can't be PSAs). Many analysts will be interested in this, too.

Google offers very few tips on how to maximize Adsense revenue. Little to nothing on smartpricing, too. It's probably losing millions every day just because of its negligence.

If I was running Adsense, I'd offer a manual to publishers as thick as the Bible, including hundreds of success stories and all kinds of tips.
