Pick your Privacy Policy

Who knows if it is what Google wants or does not want?

Privacy Policy
The following discloses the information gathering and dissemination practices for this Web site.

Log Files

Like most standard Web site servers we use log files. This includes internet protocol (IP) addresses, browser type, internet service provider (ISP), referring/exit pages, platform type, date/time stamp, and number of clicks to analyze trends, administer the site, track user’s movement in the aggregate, and gather broad demographic information for aggregate use. IP addresses, etc. are not linked to personally identifiable information.

Cookies

A cookie is a piece of data stored on the user’s computer tied to information about the user. Our site does not use cookies. However, some of our business partners use cookies on our site (for example, advertisers). However, we have no access to or control over these cookies, once we have given permission for them to set cookies for advertising.

Advertisers

We use outside ad companies to display ads on our site. These ads may contain cookies and are collected by the ad companies, and we do not have access to this information. We work with the ad companies: Google Adsense, etc. Please check their websites for respective privacy policies.

Email Adsense Support.

Ask if it's okay.

Do we need to post a policy on our Blogger.com (Blogspot) blogs as well?
I can not make a custom page there as I can only post a entry on my blog.

Ashii, do just that and then simply add a link to this post in your sidebar.

On the topic of the privacy policy requirement -- while we can't
comment specifically on what the laws in a particular country may
require, we can say that in most locations the standard business
practice is to notify users of third-party cookies and/or web beacons
in a site's privacy policy.

I sent them a second email telling them that I am in the same country and state as Google, and asked them again if my privacy policy meets GOOGLE's standards... I don't care about what the "country" wants.

Which country's privacy laws are we meant to obey anyway?

The country where the site is hosted? The site owner's place of residence? Or every country that the site is visible in?

If it's the last option (and I suspect it might be) then this privacy policy could be very tricky to write, as you'd have to take the laws of potentially hundreds of jurisdictions into consideration. That might explain why Google is refusing to provide an example.

Got an email back from Google today... the second one... giving me an ok on the Privacy Policy that I have on my web site.

Hi Mike,

Yes, the Privacy Policy layout on your site looks good!

I thought we had to mention web beacons which will be something new to most people so it seems like if we mention them we will need to explain what they are.

I'd also like to know where the privacy policy has to be linked from. Every page, pages with adsense or just the home page. I wish ASA would pop in and clarify things for us.

I linked to the PP page from a main "hub" page on my site. The HUB page leads to all the other areas of my site. That is where I linked to the PP page, and that is the only link I have to the PP page.

I think it's good practice to have a little footer on every page with copyright, link to privacy policy, link to TOS maybe, and whatever else you want there. That's what I typically do, although I haven't followed it 100%.
