Why would Adsense bot visit a site without adsense?

I just saw this one: "Mediapartners-Google/2.1" in my logfile - but there's no adsense on the website. Is that common behaviour?

Someone signed your site up with adsense, and it is going through the confirmation checks:

"does your site comply with adsense?"
"does your site have JS scripts, advertisements etc"
"do you have any dead 404 links?"

So maybe someone is posing as you?

Did anyone think that you could sign up adsense account for any URL you wanted for any major ranked 5,000- 10,000 alexa ranked site and then wait for a confirmation email?

This must be why.

you mean someone might be trying to steal this email? What could they gain from this? redirecting the fedex-truck?

Just tried to check alexa, but it couldn't be reached. But I'm pretty sure the site in question is not even close to this ranking.

So, you're positive media bot only arrives upon request?

I'm seeing more and more googlebot hits in my JAVA based tracking.

[crawl-66-249-72-175.googlebot.com]

Agent String: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)

Although it's commonly believed the bots don't execute JAVASCRIPT, why is it here.

I don't know.

Maybe something to ask in the Google search forum.

Maybe someone simply checked the page with the adsense preview tool.

It's always possible that you advertise via Adwords and it is checking landing page quality.

Judging from what I've seen in my own various logs, I think the bots are kind of all mushed up together these days. They're supposedly sharing information, and I've seen what I thought were AdSense and/or AdWords bots spidering mass quantities of images on sites with that participate in neither AdWords or AdSense.

Good possibility. Another might be a site visitor using an old version of Opera.

It certainly seems more likely than Greedy Player's speculation.

This must be why.

- This could be why.
- Possibly this is why.
- Might it be
etc.

I posted my comment on the Google search forum maybe they can figure it out. But no replies at this time yet.

as was mentioned at the last pubcon in Boston, the 2 bots share duties/information.

the appearance of the mediabot does not indicate any dubious behaviour

That's how I joined "the program" years back
Media bot started visiting me, I visited them back and the rest is history.
