Round about 20th September I had hosting problems with my irresponcible hoster not being able to fix it really had to go the other way and didn't get it sorted out until somewhere 6-7th October. During this time Google update on PR was underway and while offline I got my PR which was 4 torn to 0. That would not be so bad as my visitors from searches were only about 1%. What I have noticed is that while having a solid earning before the outage I noticed that my $/click while the update was going on (half datacenters 4, half 0 PR) earnings per click were down 30% and after PR was totaly updated it went down 50% compared to October earnings.
Anybody else seen this? My filters have also remained the same and I checked and comercials have not changed much.
PR is still bouncing around and they have been going from pr 0 to 6 and everything in between for weeks! PR is still being updated so you will probably get back what you had before.
During this time income has been as steady as the previous 3 years! And still rising slightly as before.
In any case the real pr changes constantly and the toolbar pr is just an out of date snapshot thats always a few months old anyway even after the display calculation / update is over!
So I wouldnt worry.
This is an interesting thread - But I think there is a direct correlation between page rank but not what I think is coming out in this thread...
I think in part - PR help you achieve (if the site is well optimized and has good IBL) good ranking.
That ranking helps make the site more visible.
Visibility adds to the number of visitors you get.
Now the number of people who see the site - visit the site - But are they visiting because they are interested in the specific content or are they just visiting because your site was there?
Naturally you are not going to get every visitor to click on your ads... so the number of visitors adds to your page views with no significant conversion.
Long tail searches are the answer I think...
Long tail searches are indicative of visitors looking for something very specific and I find that those convert better than the visitors who put in 1 key word and find you.
The algo is specifically built to account for the number of pages accessed versus the number of clicks per page - (CTR) - a low CTR per page - not one day but over time - gives the algo an indication that the page may not be worth what the advertiser is bidding and as such begins to optimize the cost per ad.
Therefore, IMHO - I think that there is a balance that the algo looks for ...
In the end... I think if you rank high on the long tail searches.... you will have a better CTR and higher income...
If you rank high on the 1 word search - you will get a lot more visibility but soon the law of diminishing returns takes hold and your income declines or remains the same while your number of visitors go up.
I suggest that you look at your logs... and constantly optimize the page for the long tail searches.... 3 or 4 words. If you show up high in the SERPS on these long searches - I think your site will be much more successful over time.
The Adsense game is not the same as that of a retail site. A retail site welcomes all visitors and the products sell for the same price no matter what....
In the AS game there is an internal optimization that occurs without the webmaster having any control and as such adjusts the selling price down as more people visit. Think in terms of market efficiency and the method that stock market work around the world... That is what I think AS does.
