Obstructing Ads with Navigation

If your drop-down navigation covers an ad is it ok?

I know the Adsense terms state that you cannot obstruct any portion of the ads from viewing. I'm thinking of implementing a horizontal drop down menu on my site. The ideal place to put an ad block would be below the navigation since it would be near both the navigation and the page content. The problem with this would be that when a user makes the menu drop down, it would cover the adblock.

Would that be against the rules and considered blocking the ads? When the page was viewed normally, the ad would be 100% visible. Only when the navigation is used, the ad would be obstructed. Is this something I would get nailed for, or is it legitimate?

What Google seems to really frown upon is blocking PART of the adblock, such as the Ads by Google line.

IMO, this is OK, but you could easily make a sample page and send a link to the AdSense staff for their approval. They will respond.

I would like to hear what adsense says about this if you ask them DeROK. I had the same problem so I replaced them with link units. That way I wasn't getting credited with people double clicking by mistake.

Ah, now that could be a problem. If it's possible for someone to mistakenly click on the ad when trying to click on an item in your navigation, then that would almost certainly be a violation.

So do check with the staff.

I used to have a drop down that obscured the ads, and when I enquired about this Google did say it was against the tos for the ads to be obscured this way. In fact, I only had this confirmation when I emailed them to apologise for accidentally clicking on an ad when the menu vanished faster than I expected.

It's deffinitely against the tos - no question.
