Now that I've had AdSense on it for three months, Google is depositing an average of $1,800 into my account every month. My thanks to the talented people at Google for all of their hard work in setting up and running the best search engine and the best advertising program anywhere. We may complain sometimes, but we'd be lost without you.
For those of you who are new to all this, here's what worked for me:
1: Spend ten years building a big, fast-loading site that's full of quality, original content, and keep making it better every day.
2: Get hundreds of sites to add links to it.
3: Lurk here for a couple of weeks, and read as much as you can.
4: Create a sitemap for Google to spider all of your pages. Google explains how to do this if you read their guide for Webmasters.
5: Apply for AdSense. Read what you are agreeing to. If it's available to you, go for the direct deposit.
6: Read all of the Help information Google provides. The heat map works well.
7: Add AdSense ads to some of your pages, but not all of them. That part is up to you.
8: Once a week, check every page of your site that has AdSense ads on it, and look at all of the ads. If you see something you might not want your visitors to see on your site, bookmark it and then look where it points, and if you want it off your site, filter its domain.
9: Keep reading this forum when you can. Share what you can. Don't believe everything.
10: Don't worry about anything, ever. Instead, take your dog for a run.

Doesn't sound very exciting. I spent much less on my college education and make much more on my 8-5 job.
My days are free. I can do whatever I want with them, including running my own business (which also allows me to do what I want, when I want). The AdSense is a bonus.
I created the site, and maintain it, in my spare time, when and only if I feel like it.
Part-time eh? I wonder what you could really make if you worked at it?
Come back in six months and tell us you're on USD 5~10,000.00 per month:-)

Wish Adsense came along 10 years ago.
I think it's because of a few points:
- I lost a lot of traffic down to 1/5th of what I used to get because of (see 2nd point)
- competition (it's a desktop and website backgrounds site, and probably everyone started to make their own when they saw they could make money out of it... But to the point that I'm making only 20$ per month?)
- I don't update the site no more, I feel I have done enough backgrounds, and that's not really what would draw more people, as my stats said most people were visiting the site for the first time, not from a bookmark
All in all I would say be careful, it can really be tricky, one day you're making a lot of money, but it can go down very fast, to the point of getting crazy in trying all sorts of ways to make it get where it used to be, I tried all I could and finally gave up.
Might depend in what arena your site is.

Seriously, thanks for the great tips. Glad things are going well for you. I also am thankful to everyone's advice on this great site. I've noticed a 300% increase myself since joining here!

Exceptional good start, the real challenge is how could you keep it up as the earnings are affected by many factors *** OUT *** of publisher's control.

It's good to diversify if nothing else, have some "outs". A layoff is an opportunity!
Jobs are easily as unreliable as Adsense! Your employer's company may be sold tomorrow! Competition in the job market leads to outsourcing world wide and declining incomes as a result.

Totally agree. Happened to me... well almost. when i saw my company going to s**t, I started my home catering biz and a website which made $24.75 cents in the first year. The catering biz saved my family but Adsense in my second site is providing the nice extras. Yes, in my case, the "almost" layoff was a golden opportunity. My only regret is - I SHOULD have started earlier!

lots more stress... more of a physical type now instead of the mental stress of not knowing if you have a job or not.
That's why I keep telling people... Adsense is a great "insurance policy". Something to keep money coming in even if it is only a little...
OK I DO have a second regret... that I didn't use my company's broadband leased line to the max and build a hundred websites in my 10 years with them... duhhhh ;)
Every one of the pages on my site that has AdSense ads on it has a different topic, different keywords, and unique text. Since every one of those pages has been assigned to its own URL channel in my reports, I can get an idea of what the various keyword-triggered ads are earning me. In looking at the reports over time, there are fluctuations in value everywhere. Nothing is constant.
Remember that AdWords advertisers can bid not only by keyword, but by country and by time of day. There are a few pages on my site that earn particularly well. Many pages earn relatively poorly, but there are times when ads will pay several times what they normally do.
The result of the fluctuations caused by an almost-endless number of variables leads me to believe that it's wise to have a diverse array of topics on different pages.
I would not be inclined to focus on a particular, very narrow niche, because you never know what can happen in the future.

That's a bit of a head-scratcher.
In ten years of work you've created less than 200 pages?
If I was trying to make the site something that appealed to everyone, it would lose its primary focus and become too much to maintain.
Wish Adsense came along 10 years ago.
It might have matured just as quickly and it would still be hard to make money with it now.
I'm new to adsense (not the internet) but my site already makes about 2 dollars a day, due partly to the fact i haven't started to promote like I should, but that will change this weekend..... i should get to about 50 dollars a day. for me that's a good start.

It's definitely not an authority site then, more like a jack-of-all-trades personal selection of information correctly optimised?
I would not be inclined to focus on a particular, very narrow niche, because you never know what can happen in the future.
Yep, the sky may cave in, they'll stop drilling for oil, no more cars will be sold, insurance may not be required, no one will require medical operations or advice, no more houses will be constructed and no one may go on holiday.
The entire point about the Internet for AdSensers is that, just like the real business world, it is a constantly moveable feast and, just like real business people, one has to learn to live to adopt and adopt or die.
There is not just one AdSense business model, they are all unique, it all depends on one's professionalism in extracting as much profit from it with the least expendable energy and hassle.
Of course it certainly helps enormously if one is interested and knowledgeable about the chosen subject but simply to state "htis way" or "that way"is the only correct method would be very mistaken.
Most of us here can only comment about our general experiences about our own sites and what may be best for someone else, to try and state categorically any of us knows the definitive answers is incorrect.
Even AdSense don't know that because they keep changing the game plan and algorithmic rules!
