This could be among the reasons adsensers as a whole are making less money.
I've read over and over in here about these small outages of the ads. Enough of them, selectively turned off for about 5 minutes each, to varying areas could be causing it.
I know Google isn't trying to lose money so they may be making some sort of changes in the back ground and doing this on the Q-t to keep down the speculation.
Perhaps this is the way they are testing algos or whatever to sort out scrapers and MFA's, (hopefully).
What do you think? Seen any PSA's for no reason lately?
Ann
No advertisers walking away in my case, or if some did, they must have been replaced very quickly, I am guessing only some WW AdWords forum advertisers could be dropping off (if any), but hey if the sky is falling, do sticky me, I'll switch to plan B.
Granted, a lot of that entails actually growing site popularity and expanding accordingly, but even eCPM and EPC that had dipped for me in 2004 and again in 2005 are actually up in 2006. However, I think it's just a blip before a darker trend.
If folks are seeing more PSAs it's just the "supply and demand" factor rearing its ugly head. That's to be expected. It is easier to create a site and load it with AdSense than to create a business worth advertising online about.
Chart the trajectory and we're talking about digging deeper into the lower keyword bids until that is depleted as well. Either way, it's an inevitable concern. Google's quarterly numbers show that AdSense revenue as a whole is growing briskly (though not as quickly as ad revenue on Google-owned sites), though we don't know how the revenue growth compares to the number of appliants that are being accepted.
I have seen them once in a while but they are almost immediately replaced with regular ads. I hope this is some indication of going after scumbag sites that ultimately cost all of us.
I too had a good August and July so that was not the area I was talking about.
Others have reported on here that scrapers are getting seen less and less, could this be something such as a search and distroy mission on Googles part?
Ann
P.S.
How do you know you could not have made even more? Without the scrapers and mfa's we would all probably be getting higher paying clicks. :)

You know better than to ask that question, now there's no stopping this thread going down the drain fast ;-)

Think about it though. If your cable company can randomly ping your recievers and tell when cable is being stolen it would be a walk in the park for a good Google programmer to come up with something to do the same thing giving just a short outage while the website data is being either trsmitted and analyzed or captured and analyzed later.
Interesting thought and I am sure it is possible to do.

No.
I am talking about short outages of ads for like 5 minutes or less on a more or less random basis.
Why would this be unexpected? There is limited ad inventory. Google has added features that make it easy to limit your ads to certain times of day, and to spend your budget quick instead of spacing it out. Traffic distribution is bursty, not uniform. All these things imply to me that lots of webmasters should regularly see "temporary outages", where their ads are replaced by PSAs. Further, perhaps Google has found it more profitable to clump the times of depleted ad inventory together in a less-than-uniform manner, which would easily explain it being more of a "omigod, all these ads are PSAs" feeling than a "Hmmm, I think I saw a PSA go by there".
Now, if lots of webmasters were seeing more PSA bursts than usual, that could be indicative of an overall increase in ad inventory shortage. That would be notoriously hard to discern from random webmaster reports, however.

You lost me there. Why would Google have swap in PSAs to get "website data"? Is there something missing from the data they get by fetching my page 40 times a day in the normal ways?
I don't believe I am making myself understood. I am talking about short outages of ads for like 5 minutes or less on a more or less random basis.
Well, my situation doesn't consist of a short outage. The PSA is constant and I couldn't get rid of it. Actually, I didn't try...(no changing of text, or alt tags)... I simply removed Adsense from that page.
Me neither, not for months and months.
Same here, until last Saturday's update. About an hour after the 4-hour window in which Google updated Adsense, this PSA showed up and never disappeared.
But the status is freezed, same amount of impressions, same ads display; that is half of the CTR and half of the averaged EPC, you know what, then eCPM and total income ... :P
My site always suffered from maintenance, I am not sure if it is always selected to try out AS new algorthm or whatever reason.
