My US-based site has relatively little traffic from 1 am to 4 am, yet several times lately I've seen that what happens in these hours sets the stage for how well the ads are going to pay.
Lately I've had days that are normally great get off to a slow start and end up unusually low. Today is not normally above average, but there were some strong clicks during the night, and all day the earnings have been well above average.
I'm starting to think I should be promoting my site where there's a 12-hour time difference.
Any ideas on what's happening here?

Well, since each component of the stats, clicks and money, are not updated in real time, nor at the same time, I for one find any stat short of a full day to be virtually worthless for any type of analysis.
When I log in each day to check the previous day's results I catch a glimpse of the current day's number. These can be all over the place, low, high, even out of sight. When all's said and done the day usually winds up right where it always is -- just about average.
I think this could mean two things:
1. Advertisers daily budgets are blown out overnight as soon as the clock strikes 12 and a new day starts. New ads appear and are clicked before the mass of people get online and dilute the ecpm . . . or
2. European visitors are worth more because Euro clicks are worth more than standard USD, i.e. a Euro advertiser pays .05 Euro which is more than .05 USD.
Today is not normally above average, but there were some strong clicks during the night, and all day the earnings have been well above average.
I can't remember who brought this up recently, but someone did.
I've presumed that on those days with good epc starts someone is throwing some money at one of my keywords that day. Possibly a new advertiser or someone forgot to put a zero in front of his price when bidding for a keyword. (ie, bid $0.90 instead of $0.09) I've noticed it is easy to miss that zero in my own AdWords account.

Can't confirm at all - I've seen days start well and then go down the toilet, and days start poorly and come up as some of my best ever.
Leadegroot, this is my exact same experience. Sometimes my day starts off with a bang and ends in a whimper! Other times what starts off slow, ends up an awesome day. Just another thing there is no way to predict. Normally also Sundays and Mondays are my best days while Friday and Saturday are my slowest days. Well guess what? This past few days Saturday was a really great day, better than Sunday or Monday! Who knows!
I'm guessing that some of you have noticed that checking your AdSense report just a few hours into a new day can give an indication of how well your ads are going to perform for the rest of the day.
Actually this is true for several of my clients who take online orders (and have nothing to do with AS) - if there are more than 3 or 4 orders already by the time I get into the office, it's going to be a great day. I don't know why this is, but I think it's a real phenomenon, and not just specific to AS.
