Early days on this one, but I thought I'd share information on this.

My stats have been steadly decreasing for a while. EPC has been falling and ctr has been OK, but not great. Like everybody I'm always keen to try to make changes that increase revenue.

I've been working on a couple of things lately. First of all, I've changed my main page from a tables based page to a css based layout. This has made the page load faster, but that hasn't brought about any significant change. What does seem to have made a difference is changing the type of ad block.

A long time ago I had a right aligned skyscraper. I changed that to a central rectangle and that whacked up earnings. Then Google produced the heat map! Because that change worked, I've been loth to change it. However, I thought that now was a good time to try something different. The change I made was to leave the ad block were it was, but change the rectangular ad for a skyscraper. It's still in the prime heatmap spot. The changes I've seen so far is ctr has nearly doubled and epc has increased too.

As I said, it's early days yet but it is interesting to note that a fresh layout is always worth a try - even when you are convinced that you have it right!

Are you saying you have a centered skyscraper?

lol, a centered skyscraper... i've thought about doing that in some of my longer posts. all those rectangular blocks i see on the net are getting old/annoying.

I went from one side of the screen to the other on my site and things doubled for about three months. Now it has dropped down to in between the the two and seems to be stabilizing.

Not exactly. I think that would look a bit odd!

The layout I have is banner at top, menu at left and content right of the page. The menu is 155px wide and the skyscraper is next to that, leaving the right 2/3 of the screen as content in a 1024 wide browser window. The ads are in a floating <div> so that the content wraps to the right of the ads. I think the page looks better in most resolutions, because compared to a large rectangle you see more of the content, and as you scroll down the page you see the ads for longer.

My best ads format is 768x90.

As I remember, one thing that made huge different for my revenue was when I change the ads color to blend with my site background. My revenue gradually increase up to 300%.

Wish I did it 2 years ago... :-)

Large Rectangle at the top just below the title and above the content worked for me well. But number of blocks also plays improtant role.

I guess if we use three blocks, the first position get better ads.

Have you just changed the layout or you also changed the colors along with it?

David

Go for the gusto, put the menu to the right next to the scroll bar where it should be!

With your menu next to the scroll bar your visitors will be able to navigate your site with much more efficiency.
