I've read a lot recently about ecmp and wondered if I'm on the right track:

if the value of my clicks is falling is it because of Smart Pricing where we have too mnay ads throughout the site that aren't generating clicks? (because they're too far at the bottom of the page or whatever)

And is the answer to reduce numbers of ad units and take ads off poorly performing pages?

But if our CTR is up then doesn;t that mean that our click value should be up also as we're providing better traffic than before?

Mine is a big site on a profitable keyword area and the ads seem fairly relevant, so i din't think it;s about writing pages with better keyword combinations.

Any other beginner hints?

There's no reason to assume that a higher clickthrough rate means better traffic for advertisers. For example, if the higher CTR is the result of layout tweaking (such as "blended ads" that look like navigation elements), it may mean less value for advertisers because users aren't necessarily clicking for the right reasons.

As for why your EPC and revenues are down, there could be any number of reasons. Smart pricing could be one, but competition for inventory of higher-paying ads could be another in an obvious "money" niche that attracts large numbers of publishers. If Google has a limit on how many impressions and clicks can be delivered for a given ad on a given site, you may have simply exceeded your allotment of decent-paying ads and clicks. (We don't know for sure if Google does that, but it would be a reasonable step for Google to take.)
