Adsense In New Window

Did I miss something here?

I was just on a website I frequent, related to the stock market. The site is Adsense supported. I saw an ad that caught my eye and clicked it. To my surprise the ad opened the site in a new window. I run Adsense on my sites and I've never seen this option. Did I miss something? When did sites get the ability to open ads in a new window?

Premium publishers only perhaps? Did you take a look at the ad code to see if that could explain it? Maybe there's some JavaScript code to open AdSense in new windows in the same way that clicks can be tracked without breaking the TOS?

It looks like this website is a premium publisher. Some interesting notes from their ad code.

Their ad client id is:
google_ad_client = 'TheirWebsiteNameHere_120x600';

And their adcode contains the following line:
google_safe = 'high';
